Manchester United's hopes of securing a cost-effective defensive reinforcement this summer have been thrown into doubt due to internal turmoil at Old Trafford.
United's Defensive Target Available for Free
Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi has informed the club he will not sign a new contract, making him a free agent when his current deal expires in June 2026. The 28-year-old Argentine, who has made 88 Premier League appearances since joining from Feyenoord in 2022, is now a highly sought-after asset on a Bosman transfer.
According to reports from Italian outlet Tuttosport, Manchester United made contact with Senesi's representatives in December 2024, expressing their interest in the defender. The potential move represented a significant bargain for the Red Devils, who are looking to strengthen their backline without a major transfer fee.
Managerial Chaos Halts Transfer Plans
However, United's pursuit has reportedly stalled following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim. The club confirmed the Portuguese manager's departure on Monday, 5th January 2026, after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
With Darren Fletcher installed as interim boss and the club considering Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick for a caretaker role until the season's end, the priority has shifted entirely to resolving the managerial situation. This internal focus, coupled with wider structural shakeups at the club, has pushed the Senesi deal down the agenda.
European Giants Circle as United Hesitate
This delay could prove costly, with European heavyweights ready to capitalise. Italian giants Juventus are planning talks with Senesi's camp next week, while Spanish champions Barcelona have also reportedly made contact.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola publicly expressed his desire to keep the defender, stating on 19th December: "The most important thing is that he's playing very well... I want him to continue here." Despite this, Senesi's decision to leave appears firm, especially following the summer sales of defensive colleagues Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi, and Dean Huijsen.
United now face a race against time to re-engage with the transfer. If they cannot quickly settle their managerial search, a shrewd and financially astute signing could slip through their fingers and into the hands of a direct rival.
