Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for a fee of £50 million, making him the club's most expensive acquisition of the summer transfer window so far. Santos, 22, becomes the third first-team arrival at Old Trafford this week, joining Karl Darlow and Youri Tielemans.
Santos' Journey to Old Trafford
Santos originally joined Chelsea from Vasco da Gama in January 2023 for a reported £18 million, but was immediately loaned back to his boyhood club for the remainder of the season. Upon arriving in England, he was sent on loan to Premier League side Nottingham Forest, where he struggled to make an impact, managing only two appearances. Then-Forest manager Steve Cooper attributed the difficult spell to Santos' age and the challenge of breaking into a Premier League midfield, especially as a loanee.
In January 2024, Santos returned to Chelsea and was loaned to Strasbourg, a club affiliated with the Blues. After a period of adjustment, he flourished in the 2024/25 season, scoring ten goals in 32 Ligue 1 appearances and occasionally wearing the captain's armband. His form convinced Chelsea to reintegrate him for the 2025/26 campaign, but he struggled to secure a regular starting role.
Struggles at Chelsea
At Chelsea, Santos was deployed in a deeper midfield role, which did not suit his natural game as an advanced No.8 or No.10. "The chaos at Stamford Bridge didn't help either, and Santos found it difficult to settle in last season," said Bobby Vincent, Chelsea reporter for Football.London. With Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez firmly established as the club's top midfielders, Santos made only 27 Premier League appearances, completing 90 minutes just four times. His sole league goal came in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Vincent, Santos sought regular first-team football, which Chelsea could not guarantee. "Also, with no European football, minutes for fringe players will be more difficult to come by next season at Stamford Bridge," Vincent added.
Potential and Price Tag
The £50m fee has divided opinion among fans. Vincent believes Santos has the potential to become a top-class midfielder, possibly surpassing Caicedo and Fernandez in the future. "I think Santos can become a top-class central midfielder in the future and while £50m might seem a lot, is it actually given some of the prices we've seen this summer for players in similar positions?" he said. Vincent also noted that selling to a direct Premier League rival could backfire on Chelsea if Santos fulfills his potential.
