Louis Storey leaves Gateshead for Carlisle United in player-coach exit
Louis Storey quits Gateshead for Carlisle United

Gateshead FC have confirmed that player-coach Louis Storey has rejected an offer to extend his second spell at the International Stadium and will reunite with former manager Rob Elliot at Carlisle United.

Storey's Journey at Gateshead

The former Newcastle United academy defender initially joined the Heed in the summer of 2021, just months after leading Hebburn Town to an FA Vase final win against Consett. Storey was part of the squad that won the National League North title during his first season and helped the club reach consecutive FA Trophy finals.

After working alongside Elliot following a move to League One club Crawley Town in October 2024, Storey spent time with Darlington and Dorking Wanderers before both he and Elliot returned to Gateshead earlier this year.

Key Role in Relegation Escape

Combining player and coaching duties, Storey played a crucial role in Gateshead's miraculous escape from relegation into the National League North. He was offered a chance to remain at the club in recent weeks but opted to move on.

Explaining his decision, Storey told the Heed website: "Gateshead FC will always hold a special place in my heart and I'm incredibly grateful for all of the opportunities and memories the club has given me over the years."

"I've been fortunate to work alongside some fantastic players, staff and volunteers who have become friends for life. The dedication, commitment and passion shown by everyone behind the scenes is truly special and a huge part of what makes this football club unique."

"The supporters were incredibly welcoming and supportive when I returned to the club in January, and I can't thank them enough for that. To see the belief, energy and connection grow amongst the Heed Army during the second half of the season was a real pleasure and something I'll always remember."

"It was an honour to represent the fans and this football club once again throughout my second spell here. When I returned in January, my goal was simple – to help keep Gateshead FC in the National League and help set the club up for its next chapter. I'm proud that we achieved that together and leave knowing the club is in a strong position moving forward."

"This wasn't an easy decision because of how much Gateshead means to me, but the opportunity in front of me was one I felt I couldn't turn down. I wish everyone connected with the club nothing but success in the future, and I'll always look back on my time here with great pride and affection."

Manager Search Continues

Chronicle Live understands Storey was in contention to succeed Elliot as Gateshead manager and was one of a number of candidates spoken to in recent weeks. However, the Heed hierarchy moved on to other targets once it became clear Storey was leaning towards a move to Brunton Park.

Interim chairman Graham Wood is leading the search for Elliot's successor and held face-to-face talks with another potential candidate this week. There are now high hopes an appointment can be confirmed over the next week.

The new manager will work alongside first-team coach and Heed legend Ben Clark, who penned a long-term deal at the International Stadium earlier this month.
