Jamie Carragher has spoken out about the circumstances surrounding Arne Slot's sacking, suggesting blame lies with multiple parties including the players, recruitment, and the club's hierarchy. The Liverpool legend told Sky Sports he was torn on the decision but believes an elite manager should find a way to improve the team, though Slot was not helped by recruitment.
Carragher criticised Mo Salah for publicly criticising the manager, saying player power should not force the club's hand. He added that whoever takes charge next will be expected to deliver league title glory, but expressed concern about fixture congestion suiting potential candidates.
Meanwhile, a decision has been reached on Joe Gomez's future. According to The Athletic, the defender will remain at Anfield for the final year of his contract and depart next summer. Gomez, who joined in 2015, managed just six Premier League starts this season and had attracted interest from AC Milan and Newcastle United.
When asked about his future, Gomez said: 'I don't know is the honest answer. I've only got a year left on my contract, so I don't know. Whatever's meant to be will be.'
The news comes after Ibrahima Konate's departure this summer was confirmed, joining Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in leaving Anfield. Konate was crucial to Liverpool's title success in 2024/2025 and won two League Cups and an FA Cup during his spell.
