Cristiano Ronaldo could be set to end his international career after Portugal's World Cup clash with Croatia, according to a bombshell revelation from his sister Katia Aveiro. Speaking to Portuguese broadcaster SportTV before the last-32 match in Toronto, Aveiro claimed that the 41-year-old forward will retire from the national team if they are defeated.
Aveiro's Emotional Interview
“From the information I have, they can say goodbye. Enjoy it while it lasts. It's not today that they're saying goodbye, but it's soon. I believe this is their farewell,” Aveiro said. She added, “I'm talking about the national team. The information I have, from a reliable source, I believe this is his last dance.”
Aveiro also referenced the criticism Ronaldo has faced, stating, “For intelligent people, those who like football have to like Ronaldo. Those who don't like Ronaldo don't like football. They're the ones who lose out. He's been tearing it up for over 20 years. Do they think the criticism will interfere with our happiness? Never.”
Ronaldo's World Cup Performance
Ronaldo, who has scored twice in the tournament—both in a 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan—has faced scrutiny over his displays. Despite this, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has kept faith in the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who captains the side. Notably, Ronaldo has never scored or assisted in a World Cup knockout match.
Portugal finished second in Group K behind Colombia, drawing 0-0 with them in their final group game. A win against Croatia would set up a last-16 clash with Spain.
Acknowledging Modric's Potential Farewell
Aveiro also acknowledged that Croatia's Luka Modric, Ronaldo's former Real Madrid teammate, could be playing his final international match. “It's the last dance for two players, both for Croatia and for Portugal. The most important thing is to enjoy these 20-odd years that we've lived, won, and come so far,” she said.
