Liverpool plot shock £35m swoop for England star Spence

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a surprise transfer move for Tottenham and England defender Djed Spence this summer. The 25-year-old has impressed during his return to north London and was a breakout star at the World Cup, but his future at Spurs remains uncertain.

Spence's resurgence and World Cup success

Spence joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough in 2022 for £20 million, but after loan spells at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa, he returned last season and rediscovered the form that originally attracted Spurs. His strong end to the 2025/26 campaign earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, where he delivered a series of eye-catching performances in the knockout stages.

Tottenham open to offers

According to The Sun, Spence is not guaranteed a starting spot under Roberto De Zerbi, with Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson favoured as the full-backs. Tottenham are reportedly 'open' to selling Spence and would consider offers in the region of £35 million before the transfer deadline.

Liverpool, under new manager Andoni Iraola, are among the clubs monitoring the situation as they look to strengthen their defence. However, they face competition from Inter Milan and AC Milan, both of whom have shown interest in the England international.

Inter Milan's interest

Inter have already held discussions with Spence's representatives, having been alerted to his abilities during his loan spell with Genoa two years ago. Reports in Italy suggest Spence 'truly wanted to return' to Serie A to replace Denzel Dumfries, but the Nerazzurri have yet to make a formal move.

Spence signed a new contract with Tottenham last August, keeping him at the club until June 2028. As a World Cup participant, he was not included in the squad for pre-season tour matches in New Zealand and Australia. Spurs face Getafe in a friendly on Saturday before hosting Hoffenheim the following weekend, and they begin their Premier League campaign away to Brentford on August 22.
