JJ Gabriel remains set to depart Manchester United despite featuring in the club's official first-team squad photograph, with substantial demands made on playing time which were ultimately rejected. The 15-year-old forward stood alongside senior squad members in the 2026/27 team picture, only to officially hand in a transfer request mere days afterwards.
United were stunned by Gabriel's wish to leave, with the youngster declining to train ahead of the Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton prior to the recent three-week international break. Had he been selected against the Seagulls, he would have become the youngest player in the club's history.
Training absence and individual sessions
Gabriel has been absent from training at Carrington for over a fortnight, instead maintaining his fitness levels through individual sessions in Castelldefels, near Barcelona. It is understood Gabriel has worked with specialist local coaches during his time in Spain, while also periodically bringing in a private coach from Manchester.
Despite his determination to leave, the forward's options remain restricted due to his age. The teenager cannot sign a scholarship agreement until turning 16 or secure a professional contract until reaching 17. Under existing regulations, however, he remains registered with United until the conclusion of the 2026/27 season.
European interest and legal considerations
Gabriel will turn 16 on Tuesday, October 6, which could pave the way for a switch elsewhere in Europe. As an Irish passport holder, the youngster is entitled to sign for a club within the European Union, provided any deal receives the requisite approval from FIFA, whose rules govern the international movement of players aged under 18.
The attacking talent has attracted attention from a number of top clubs across the continent, with Barcelona and Real Madrid understood to be amongst his most keen admirers. It is thought Gabriel could be free to move abroad upon reaching his 16th birthday owing to his Irish nationality.
Club efforts and playing time demands
According to Sky Sports, Gabriel is 'still expected to leave' despite United 'reaching out multiple times' to repair relations with Gabriel and his family, but those efforts have yet to produce a breakthrough. The club are said to remain confident they have presented a clear pathway towards senior football.
Prior to submitting his request to depart, Gabriel and his family reportedly sought guarantees over first-team opportunities, including at least 20 minutes of action against Sabah in the Champions League, Brighton in the Carabao Cup and the upcoming Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, before entering into discussions over a scholarship agreement.
Due to his age, Gabriel could not have been added to United's 'B-list' for the Champions League fixture against Sabah, as players must be at least 16 to qualify for that bracket. Consequently, he would have required a spot on the 25-man 'A-list', which the club opted against, despite including the injured Manuel Ugarte.
Amid the lingering uncertainty, no formal club-to-club approach has yet been made. Nevertheless, United are reportedly prepared to explore legal avenues should another club attempt to sign Gabriel via what they believe to be a loophole in FIFA regulations.
The talented youngster further stoked speculation over his future by scrubbing all references to United from his social media profiles the day after netting a hat-trick against Sabah. Gabriel holds the distinction of being the youngest ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, and enjoyed a remarkable 2025/26 season, bagging 26 goals in just 29 appearances. He has carried that impressive form into the current campaign, finding the net five times in his opening three matches, including goals in each of his first two Premier League 2 outings.
