Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel turned 16 on Tuesday, a milestone that could prove decisive in his bid to leave the club. The teenager has informed United of his intention to depart, and his age now means he could move abroad immediately if he obtains an EU passport.
Gabriel is regarded as one of the most promising academy players in world football but has grown frustrated with his progress. He has been pushing for his registration to be cancelled so he can join another club. United remain determined to keep him and have been working to persuade Gabriel and his representatives to reconsider, though there is growing pessimism they will succeed.
Real Madrid lead overseas interest
A move abroad appears the likeliest outcome because Gabriel could leave at once if he secures an EU passport through his father, who represented the Republic of Ireland, or his mother, who is of Greek-Cypriot descent. British players generally cannot move overseas before 18 unless they qualify for an exemption, including possession of an EU passport. A foreign move would also bypass Premier League academy registration restrictions, allowing Gabriel to join immediately rather than wait until the end of the season.
Gabriel and his family travelled to Barcelona after formally informing United of his decision, and he is now training in the city with a private coach. Barcelona have publicly ruled themselves out, leaving Real Madrid as frontrunners. According to Sky Germany, Los Blancos are prepared to offer Gabriel an "XXL" contract. Real Madrid previously handed a 16-year-old Martin Odegaard a deal reportedly worth £80,000 a week in 2015, though Gabriel is not expected to receive an offer on that scale given changes in football's financial landscape. Bayern Munich have held talks with Gabriel's representatives, while PSG have not given up hope.
If Gabriel moves overseas, United would receive only a modest training compensation sum, expected to be below £1million, unless they could prove another club illegally tapped him up.
Premier League move more complicated
Should Gabriel remain in England, United can block a domestic move until the end of the season by retaining his registration. A player's registration can only be cancelled with agreement of all parties, unless the Premier League intervenes. A domestic transfer would also allow United to pursue a substantial compensation claim, potentially going to tribunal. Liverpool were ordered to pay Chelsea £2.8m for Rio Ngumoha after his 2024 move between academies.
Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have all shown interest at various stages, with City coming close to signing Gabriel last year before he decided to stay. A Premier League move remains possible but appears more complicated and less likely than a move overseas, given Gabriel's determination to leave United as soon as possible.
