Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has broken his silence on the dramatic circumstances surrounding his summer switch from Newcastle United, describing the process as 'complicated' while defending the club's much-debated ownership.
The 'Complicated' Exit from St James' Park
In his first detailed newspaper interview since the high-profile transfer, the Swedish international has chosen his words carefully. Isak left Newcastle on deadline day in a deal worth £125 million, joining the reigning Premier League champions at Anfield where he has since scored twice.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Sportbladet upon receiving Sweden's Golden Ball award, Isak acknowledged the complexity behind the scenes. "I can say this: Things are always more complicated than they seem," he stated. The forward hinted at 'broken promises' that contributed to his exit but refused to delve deeper, insisting he has moved on. "It is not something that I want to do, based on the fact that I have put it behind me," Isak explained.
Addressing the Newcastle Ownership Question
Journalists also pressed Isak on his original 2022 decision to join Newcastle, a club owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The striker, who was signed from Real Sociedad for £63 million, sidestepped political commentary and defended his career choice.
"We understand how things can be twisted and turned. You can find negative things when it comes to everyone," he said. Isak emphasised the sporting appeal, adding, "It's an English club in the best league in the world, a step in your career." When asked if players deserve criticism for joining Newcastle, he was unequivocal: "No. I think that’s a very long shot."
Looking Forward with Liverpool
In contrast to the complexity of his departure, Isak described his move to Merseyside as straightforward. "Yes. That was the most interesting thing for me. I felt pretty early on that this was where I wanted to go," he revealed.
He cited the club's illustrious history, its current status, and future ambitions as the 'holistic picture' that attracted him. The transfer has proven a landmark in a career rejuvenated at Newcastle, where his form earned him a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year last season.
By closing the chapter on his Newcastle past, Isak is now firmly focused on contributing to Liverpool's title defence and forging his own legacy at Anfield.
