Iraola's dream Curtis Jones replacement as Liverpool eye £78m star

Curtis Jones's future at Liverpool is uncertain, and that could open the door for a high-profile replacement. If the Reds need to fill his void, one option stands out above the rest: Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.

Jones has attracted significant transfer interest and could still leave before the window closes. Inter Milan have pursued the 25-year-old since January, with two bids rejected. The second, worth £21.7 million, came in June, and further contact was made last month over a potential £30 million deal. However, that still falls short of Liverpool's £35 million valuation.

Iraola's Stance on Jones

Andoni Iraola previously expressed a desire to keep Jones at Liverpool for the upcoming season. Speaking in July, the Reds boss called the midfielder a "great player" and urged him to stay at Anfield.

"It's very important that he's Scouse, that he's from here. I also like the personality. From the outside at least he looks like a player with good character and I hope we can keep him, not only for this year but for more time," Iraola said.

However, those words contrast with the current situation. If Jones departs, Iraola would be short in midfield, both in general terms and in proven experience. In an ideal scenario, a Jones exit would be followed by a swift replacement of higher calibre.

Wharton as the Dream Replacement

Wharton, 22, has long been linked with a move to Liverpool and is in high demand, with reported interest from Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea. Palace are desperate to keep him and have set a £78 million price tag.

His acquisition would act as perfect defensive reinforcement, with his impressive interception rate and short-passing game marking him out as a quality addition. Liverpool would also be getting a player yet to hit his peak, having excelled both at home and in Europe at 22.

Wharton would fit seamlessly into a team with progression in its DNA. Hugo Ekitike is 24, Jeremy Jacquet is 21, Giovanni Leoni is 19, Florian Wirtz and Victor Munoz are both 23, while Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumhoa are also teenagers. Adding Wharton would also allow Ryan Gravenberch to play further forward and assist Dominik Szoboszlai in attacking areas.

Of course, the England international wouldn't come cheap, and any move would likely depend on Jones's own future. But as dream replacements go, Wharton would be right up there.
