Hojlund's Napoli goal drought: Man Utd star prioritises team success over personal glory
Hojlund on Napoli goal drought as Man Utd transfer arranged

Rasmus Hojlund has broken his silence on a frustrating spell in front of goal for Napoli, emphasising that collective achievement trumps personal accolades. The Manchester United forward, currently on loan with the Italian champions, is poised to make his switch permanent next summer in a deal worth £38.8 million.

From Old Trafford to Naples: A Transfer in Motion

The 22-year-old Danish striker joined Napoli on a temporary basis after a mixed spell at Manchester United. Hojlund made 95 appearances for the Premier League side following his arrival from Atalanta in August 2023, scoring 26 goals. His inability to find consistent form, however, prompted United to reinforce their attack, leading to his loan departure.

The agreement with Napoli includes a permanent transfer clause, activated upon the Serie A club securing a Champions League spot for next season. Currently, Napoli sit second in the table, trailing leaders AC Milan only on goal difference as they defend the title they won last term.

Assists Over Goals: Hojlund's Recent Contribution

Despite a bright beginning in Italy, Hojlund's goals have dried up. He has netted just four times in 13 matches across all competitions, with his last goal coming in October against Genoa. His most recent strikes were a Champions League brace against Sporting in the same month.

Yet, the forward has remained influential in Napoli's title charge. In crucial victories against Atalanta and AS Roma, Hojlund provided vital assists, helping secure six precious points. Speaking to DAZN after setting up the winner against Roma, he addressed his drought head-on.

"Obviously, I'd like to score a lot of goals again and start doing so soon," Hojlund admitted. "But it's important to always contribute to the team, and I'm happy to help. I try my best to be useful. I consider myself a team player: winning is more important than scoring goals."

Conte's Conviction and the Road Ahead

A key figure in Hojlund's move was Napoli manager Antonio Conte. The striker revealed the Italian coach was instrumental in convincing him to make the switch, describing Conte as a "top coach."

"I came here because I knew this was an important step for me," Hojlund explained. "Napoli is a great club and a wonderful place to live. It's exactly what I need right now in my career."

Conte has previously expressed strong belief in Hojlund's potential, praising him after his October goal. "He's a 22-year-old who was on the sidelines at Manchester United," Conte stated. "He has significant room for improvement. He needs to work because he has the potential to become a star, and he's proving it."

As Napoli continue their fight for Serie A and Champions League glory, Hojlund's adaptation and team-first mentality will be vital. His permanent transfer from Manchester United, contingent on Napoli's final league position, adds a significant subplot to the remainder of the campaign.
