Peter Fury has dismissed Anthony Joshua's claim that he is helping him prepare for his fight against Tyson Fury. Joshua had said he enlisted the help of Fury's estranged uncle Peter as he prepares to face his British rival in Cardiff on December 11.
Joshua has reunited with trainer Ben Davison for the fight, having parted company with him after his fifth-round knockout by Daniel Dubois in 2024. Joshua claimed Peter Fury has been giving him guidance 11 years after stepping down as his nephew's coach because of a rift between the two.
Joshua's claim
Joshua said: “I speak to Peter Fury. He’s willing to help me as well. Yeah, I’ll speak to him. Not about Fury but about our training and our approach – how I can approach the fight. The last time I spoke to him must have been about a month ago.”
But Peter Fury took to social media to play down the claim. “Me and AJ spoke two months ago about advice on his skill set – really nice guy,” he wrote. “After his fight, anything he needs from me [would] be a pleasure. He has a great team around him, including Team Usyk. My focus now is Rico [Verhoeven], we start camp very soon.”
Davison's role
Davison helped Fury rebuild after he ballooned in weight amid a battle with depression, alcohol and substance abuse following his points win against Wladimir Klitschko. The two worked together for two years.
Joshua said: “It wasn’t so much about going to Ben and Peter because they have worked with Fury before. What I’ve got to do is take control of my fight with Fury but also add their touch. And with these two powerhouses coming together, I think it will be a match made in heaven. I do believe that. I’m at a stage in my life now where everybody better shut up and listen to me when it comes to boxing because I’ve learned more than most people and most coaches now.”
Fury's response
Davison was in the corner for Joshua’s defeat by Dubois, Moses Itauma’s upset loss to Filip Hrgovic and Fabio Wardley’s stoppage by Dubois. Fury mocked Joshua’s decision to return to his old trainer, after he had linked up with Fury’s former conqueror Oleksandr Usyk for his last two fights.
Fury said: “This is the same Ben Davison who Anthony Joshua left because he wasn’t good enough. This gives me encouragement. That gives me happiness. Joshua will probably go out there, get told to throw a jab and throw an uppercut and get himself chinned.”
