First Man City player leaves after 114 charges verdict

Cardiff City have confirmed the signing of Charlie Holt from Manchester City, making the 17-year-old the first player to leave the Etihad Stadium since the club was found guilty of 114 of 115 Premier League financial breach charges last week. Holt, a midfielder, will join Cardiff's Under-21s rather than the first team.

Departure follows guilty verdict

Manchester City have submitted an appeal against the verdict, maintaining their innocence and claiming to have a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” that should clear them of any wrongdoing. Potential punishments mentioned in the days since the verdict include points deductions, fines, stripping of past trophies, and expulsion from the Premier League.

The appeal is expected to be heard by an independent three-person panel before the end of the year, with a decision anticipated in the months ahead.

Holt's move to Cardiff

Holt had signed a scholarship deal with City in the summer of 2025 and featured 12 times for the club's Under-18s last season, helping them win the Premier League North. He explained his decision to leave Manchester for Cardiff in an interview with Cardiff's club website.

“I'm very pleased to be here. It's a great opportunity and a different challenge for me,” Holt said. “It's a brilliant environment to be in and I can't wait to get started. I'd say I'm an energetic player with technical ability on the ball. Hopefully, I can chip in with a few goals as well. The opportunities that you can get here at Cardiff City are clear to see. It's a great place to be.”
