It was already looking like a massive summer rebuild for Rangers, but a move for Danny Rohl could present another headache. The German is wanted as the new boss of RB Salzburg after just eight months in the Ibrox hot seat. Links to Wolfsburg were dismissed by the man himself earlier this summer, but a switch to Austria is a live option for Rohl with the two clubs locked in talks over his future. Here is everything you need to know about the boss and the prospect of a move to Salzburg.
Who is Danny Rohl?
The Rangers manager caught the eye of the Glasgow giants after his time at Sheffield Wednesday, while boasting an impressive coaching career. The 37-year-old worked with Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich and as assistant manager of the Germany national team following coaching stints at RB Leipzig and Southampton under Ralph Hasenhuttl.
How has he done at Rangers?
It is a mixed bag. The German took over from Russell Martin while the club were a shambles and slumming it in the lower reaches of the Scottish Premiership. He steered Rangers back into the title race, but four defeats in five post-split fixtures saw their challenge fall apart. With the club ending the season trophyless and third in the table, some fans have turned sour on the boss.
Why do Red Bull Salzburg want Danny Rohl?
The German has experience of the Red Bull system, so would be able to adjust to his new surroundings quickly. Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer and Liverpool icon Jurgen Klopp is said to be leading the push for Rohl, and is keen on his footballing philosophy and track record of developing young talent.
What has Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh said?
Just last month the American owner offered his public support for Rohl, insisting the gaffer was the man to bring silverware back to the club, and wanted him to remain in Glasgow: "Our goal is obviously to bring titles to Rangers in the future, beginning with next year. And in order to do that, we believe Danny needs to be our coach. Danny wants to be here, we want Danny to be here, and most importantly we believe he is the best manager to bring a title to us next year."
What has Danny Rohl said?
Amid links with Wolfsburg, Rohl insisted he was committed to Rangers last month: "If you go by speculation, I would have already had 15 coaching positions. My focus is here in Glasgow. I like the job because I can compete for titles here."
Does Danny Rohl have an exit clause?
According to the man himself, no. Speaking to BILD, he said: "No, I don't have them."
How much will Rangers land in compensation?
Well, Rohl has a deal until the summer of 2028 so expect the Light Blues to demand a decent sum. The two clubs are in talks over a potential fee.
When could Danny Rohl leave Rangers?
Record Sport understands Andrew Cavenagh wants a decision, one way or another, as soon as possible to limit the impact on pre-season plans. The majority of the Rangers playing staff report back for pre-season training on June 22, with the team jetting out to Austria for a training camp on July 10.
Who could replace Danny Rohl at Rangers?
Three names are likely to be in the frame immediately. Both Steven Gerrard and Shanghai Port boss Kevin Muscat held talks with the club before Rohl's appointment, and could be back on the agenda. Hearts boss and former Rangers star Derek McInnes is also an obvious frontrunner, but has previously rejected the job.
