Chelsea Football Club are reportedly in pole position to secure the signature of highly-rated Burkina Faso teenager Mohamed Zongo, seeing off significant competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City and Manchester United.
A Star is Born at the U17 World Cup
The 16-year-old attacking midfielder burst onto the radar of top European scouts with his outstanding performances at the recent U17 World Cup in Qatar. Playing for his country as a 15-year-old, Zongo was a driving force in Burkina Faso's unexpected run to the quarter-finals.
His energetic displays caught the eye, particularly in matches where he scored against both Germany and the Czech Republic. In the narrow quarter-final defeat to Italy, which was settled by a late winner, Zongo was desperately unlucky not to score, hitting both the crossbar and the post.
Profile of a Prodigy
Zongo is described as an athletic, strong, and versatile left-footed player. Primarily an attacking midfielder, his game intelligence allows him to break up opposition play and swiftly transition defence into attack with intuitive passing. He also offers tactical flexibility, capable of playing on the right wing and cutting inside onto his favoured left foot.
The youngster hails from the Tenakourou Academy in Burkina Faso and has also attracted attention from European clubs such as Spain's Villarreal and Belgium's Anderlecht. However, Chelsea's concerted efforts have now made them favourites to complete the deal.

This move aligns perfectly with Chelsea's ongoing strategy under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, which has seen the Stamford Bridge club aggressively recruit top teenage talent from across the globe.
The club's multi-club model, particularly its affiliation with French sister club Strasbourg, is a key part of this plan, offering a clear pathway to first-team football for young signings. This framework is already in use for other acquisitions.
Chelsea have a deal in place for 16-year-old Ecuadorian centre-back Deinner Ordonez from Independiente Del Valle. Furthermore, they have agreed to sign 17-year-old São Paulo right-back Angelo Candido, who is expected to join Strasbourg initially once he turns 18.
