Newcastle United Under-21s defender Charlie McArthur has confirmed his departure from the club in an emotional social media post, bringing an end to his four-year stint with the Magpies.
McArthur's Journey at Newcastle
The Scotland Youth international joined Newcastle from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2022, having previously attracted interest from Manchester City, Liverpool, and West Ham United. Although McArthur had made four senior appearances early in his career in Scotland, his introduction to life at Newcastle came through the Under-18s side. He featured alongside players like Lewis Miley, Aidan Harris, and Ben Parkinson in the first three games of the 2022/23 season.
McArthur progressed to the Under-21 level the following campaign and marked his debut for the second string with a goal in a thrilling 5-3 home win against Southampton. His first loan move came during the second half of the 2024/25 season, where he worked under former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson and Manchester United legend Mark Hughes at Carlisle United.
Loan Spell and Senior Football
The centre-back continued to feature for Newcastle's Under-21s last season but expressed a desire for more first-team football. He got his wish with a second loan move to Scottish Championship club Airdrieonians, where he made 16 appearances and scored his first senior goals against Greenock Morton and Ayr United.
Emotional Farewell
With his Newcastle contract now expired, McArthur paid tribute to the staff and players at the club, describing the Magpies as 'a special club' as he looks toward the next step in his career. In his statement, he said: "As I move on to the next chapter in my career, I would like to say thank you to everyone at Newcastle United for the support, opportunities, and memories over the past four years. It has been a pleasure to be part of such a special club, and I am grateful to all the staff and players I have worked alongside. I wish everyone connected with NUFC all the very best for the future."
Academy Departures and Retentions
Newcastle had already confirmed that academy prospects Alfie Harrison, Ciaran Thompson, Adam Harrison, James Taylor, Joe Brayson, Thomas Bryant, and Darren Palmer were released after their contracts ended. Academy director Steve Harper commented: "I want to extend my thanks to all the players moving on from the Academy this summer. They have all made positive contributions during their time here and they are all well placed to continue their football journey on the back of the platform they've built. Our support for each of them will continue as they take their next steps. The Academy remains a resource for them and I look forward to seeing where their journeys take them. On behalf of everyone at the football club, we wish them every success for the future."
Meanwhile, Dylan Charlton, Scott Bailey, Luke Craggs, and Johnny Emerson have all had one-year options triggered in their contracts. Emerson, in particular, will hope to make an impact during pre-season as he returns from a long injury lay-off.
