Defensive Departures and Urgent Needs
The immediate priority has been heightened by the imminent departure of loan signing Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. The 20-year-old Manchester City defender is set to have his loan spell at Parkhead terminated after making just a single appearance for the Scottish champions.
Simpson-Pusey's return to the Etihad, where he was a regular in Pep Guardiola's squad last season, leaves Celtic critically short of cover in central defence. This exit means the club's recruitment plans have expanded, and they are now likely to seek two new centre-backs instead of one.
Araujo Deal Hangs in the Balance
One key target remains Julian Araujo, the 24-year-old Mexican international full-back currently at Bournemouth. Celtic are locked in talks over a loan deal and were pushing to have the player registered in time for tomorrow's crucial Old Firm clash with Rangers at Celtic Park.
However, the move is complicated by Bournemouth's quota of loan deals. It is understood the Premier League side would need to recall another player from their own loan spells before they can sanction Araujo's temporary switch to Glasgow.
Nancy Under Pressure as Attack Also a Priority
The defensive recruitment drive comes with manager Wilfried Nancy under immense pressure following a dismal start to his tenure. The Frenchman has overseen five defeats in his first seven games, amplifying the need for swift and effective signings.
Nancy has emphasised that character is a non-negotiable trait in any new arrival. "It is important that, when you sign players, they need to have personality," he stated last week. "This is a big club. To play here is not always easy."
Despite the focus on defence, the club remains in the market for two new forwards to address a lack of firepower. With Kelechi Iheanacho injured and Callum Osmand facing a long spell out, the attacking line has been reliant on Daizen Maeda, Johnny Kenny, and Shin Yamada.
