Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has attributed his club's failure to secure several transfer targets this summer to the financial power of the Premier League. The latest player to slip through Bayern's grasp is teenage striker Nick Woltemade, who is on the verge of joining Newcastle United.
Kompany, speaking at a press conference, was asked why players like Florian Wirtz and Woltemade are choosing Premier League clubs over Bayern. His succinct reply, 'Money,' drew laughter from reporters. He then elaborated, highlighting the disparity in television revenue between the two leagues.
'I always remember going with Burnley to the Premier League,' Kompany said. 'We got promoted and all of a sudden you have TV money coming in and it's £100m for promoted teams. That would compete with the top six in the Bundesliga.'
Kompany urged the Bundesliga to find ways to remain competitive, noting that the Premier League's financial model has been developed over many years. He added that while Bayern have missed out on some targets, the constant flow of young talent in Germany means new stars will emerge.
