Marcus Rashford’s hopes of securing a permanent move to Barcelona are hanging in the balance after the Catalan club’s financial difficulties came to light. The Manchester United forward is currently on a season-long loan at the Camp Nou, with Barcelona holding an option to buy him for £26 million this summer. However, the club is reportedly struggling to raise the funds and is pushing to either negotiate a lower fee or extend the loan for another year.
United, eager to cut ties with Rashford permanently, are opposed to any further loan arrangement. Barcelona have until 15 June to exercise their option, but their ability to pay is in question amid reports that the club is “running out of money” to complete the renovation of the Nou Camp. The project has exceeded its £1.25 billion budget, with a loan from Goldman Sachs proving insufficient. The club will seek to raise its credit limit at an Extraordinary General Assembly in July or at the next ordinary meeting before the season starts.
Once additional funding is secured, Barcelona will focus on constructing two VIP rings and the third tier, a process expected to stretch until next summer. The final phase—adding a roof—will require another temporary relocation, likely back to the Olympic Stadium at Montjuïc, though a dispute with Barcelona City Council has cast doubt on that option. These financial woes explain Barcelona’s reluctance to meet the full £26 million option fee for Rashford.
Other clubs, including Bayern Munich, are monitoring the situation. Bayern are reportedly willing to meet United’s asking price but not Rashford’s current wages. The 28-year-old, however, has no desire to join Vincent Kompany’s side and is not entertaining approaches from rival clubs. Nevertheless, unless Barcelona can reach an agreement with United, Rashford may have little choice. For now, he is focused on the World Cup and England’s final pre-tournament friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday.
