Bournemouth are facing a significant defensive reshuffle as key centre-back Marcos Senesi has become the subject of a major transfer tussle between Spanish giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Contract Situation Sparks Transfer Race
According to reports emerging from Spain, the 28-year-old Argentine international is now free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside the Premier League. This is because his current deal with the Cherries is set to expire in the summer of 2024.
Senesi has reportedly turned down several offers to extend his stay at the Vitality Stadium, signalling his intent to seek a new challenge. His availability on a free transfer has alerted top European sides looking for defensive reinforcements without a hefty transfer fee.
Spanish Giants Seek Defensive Reinforcements
Catalan publication Mundo Deportivo states that Atletico Madrid have now entered the race alongside Barcelona, with both clubs keen to bolster their backlines. Barcelona's interest is part of a broader defensive search, as they have also been linked with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, whose contract runs until June 2026.
Senesi has been a crucial figure for Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth this season, making 17 appearances and establishing himself as a mainstay in their defence. His consistent performances in the Premier League have clearly not gone unnoticed.
Further Departure Looms for Bournemouth
The potential loss of Senesi is not the only concern for Bournemouth in the January transfer window. The club also appears set to lose winger Antoine Semenyo, with Manchester City leading the chase for his signature.
Semenyo has a release clause valued at £65 million, although this clause is only active until the second week of January. While Manchester United and Chelsea also registered interest, it is understood the player prefers a move to work under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
These potential exits represent a challenging period for Bournemouth, who risk losing two important first-team players during the current window. The club's management will now be under pressure to identify suitable replacements if the departures materialise.
