Zverev vs Lehecka Suspended at Wimbledon Due to 11pm Curfew

Alexander Zverev and Jiri Lehecka had their Wimbledon fourth-round match suspended on Monday night due to the All England Club's strict 11pm curfew. Zverev leads 6-4, 7-5, 3-3 and will resume on Tuesday with a place in the quarter-finals against Taylor Fritz at stake.

The players entered Court One at 8:40pm, racing against time to complete the match before the curfew imposed by Merton Council as a planning condition for the Centre Court roof, operational since 2009. The first set lasted 42 minutes, the second 54 minutes, and after a lengthy toilet break by Lehecka, the third set began at 10:32pm. The match supervisor halted play at 10:56pm midway through the set.

Curfew Conditions and Impact

Wimbledon's 11pm curfew is a planning condition designed to balance the tournament's scale with the needs of local residents. A 2018 Wimbledon statement explained: "The 11pm curfew is a Planning Condition applied to balance the consideration of the local residents with the scale of an international tennis event that takes place in a residential area. The challenge of transport connectivity and getting visitors home safely is also a key consideration."

Zverev and Lehecka were delayed earlier because Arthur Fery's marathon five-set win over Grigor Dimitrov ran long. Earlier, Jasmine Paolini needed three sets to beat Alexandra Eala.

Gauff's Race Against the Clock

On Sunday night, Coco Gauff narrowly avoided the curfew, finishing her 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Belinda Bencic at 10:58pm. She pointed at her wrist in celebration. Gauff said: "I was looking at the clock the last service game. I was like, 'I got to hit some big serves and some big shots.' And honestly, that match point, I was going for a serve and volley because I was like, 'I need to end the point.' That was probably the most dramatic finish. I've never had to race against time. Playing tennis we're used to not having a clock. But honestly, today I felt the pressure. … Glad I didn't choose basketball."

Zverev and Lehecka will return to Centre Court on Tuesday, though their specific slot remains unclear.
