Manchester United have completed the signing of Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for a fee of £40 million, the Premier League clubs confirmed on Tuesday. The 28-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the option of a further year at Old Trafford.
Transfer Details and Contract
Tielemans, who joined Aston Villa from Leicester City in 2023, made 85 appearances for the Villans, scoring 12 goals. He was a key figure in Villa's midfield, helping them secure European qualification in the 2023-24 season. The transfer fee could rise to £45 million with add-ons.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Manchester United,” Tielemans said. “This is a club with a rich history and I’m excited to work under the manager and contribute to the team’s success.”
Impact on Manchester United
The signing addresses United’s need for a creative midfielder following the departure of Christian Eriksen. Tielemans is expected to compete for a starting spot alongside Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount. United manager Erik ten Hag praised the signing: “Youri is a top-quality midfielder with experience at the highest level. He will bring creativity and control to our midfield.”
Aston Villa’s Response
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery acknowledged the departure: “Youri has been a fantastic player for us, but we respect his desire to move. We have a strong squad and will look to strengthen further.” Villa are reportedly targeting a replacement midfielder before the transfer window closes.
