Xabi Alonso has predicted that Spain will win the World Cup as they prepare to face France in the semi-final. The former Spain international, who won the tournament in 2010, expressed confidence in the current squad during his unveiling as Chelsea's new manager on Monday.
Alonso's Confidence in Spain
Speaking at Stamford Bridge, Alonso said: "Spain have a great team and I can see them winning this World Cup for sure. They play really good and they have a really strong team." He added that watching Spain's games brought back memories of the 2010 triumph, citing the team's energy and control.
Spain have reached the semi-final unconvincingly, needing late winners from Mikel Merino to beat Belgium and Portugal in the last two rounds. They now face France, who have not conceded in the knockout stages.
Impact on Chelsea's Pre-Season
Alonso also addressed Chelsea's four players still at the World Cup, including Malo Gusto, who could face Spain. He said their absences were planned and he is happy for them, adding: "Hopefully at the end we will have a world champion when they come back to Cobham."
