World Cup Yellow Card Rules: Suspensions in Knockout Stage

FIFA has introduced a new yellow card suspension rule for the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup, providing relief to players who received a single booking in the group stage. Under the updated regulations, yellow cards are wiped after the group stage and again after the quarter-final stage, meaning a player like England’s Declan Rice, who was cautioned in the draw with Ghana, will not face suspension if booked in the Round of 32.

How Yellow Card Suspensions Work in the Knockout Stage

If a player receives a yellow card in both the Round of 32 and the Round of 16, they will be suspended for the quarter-final. Similarly, a booking in either the Round of 32 or Round of 16 combined with a yellow card in the quarter-final results in a suspension for the semi-final. However, because of the amnesty after the quarter-finals, a yellow card in the semi-final does not rule a player out of the final. Only a red card in the semi-final can cause a player to miss the championship match.

Red Card Suspensions and Appeals

Any player shown a red card at any stage of the World Cup is automatically suspended for the team’s next match. Yellow cards and red cards resulting from a second yellow cannot be appealed. The only exception is straight red cards, which can be appealed to FIFA within a limited timeframe. A successful appeal may overturn the card, but the appeals committee also has the power to extend the ban for violent conduct.
