Rafael Jodar and Joao Fonseca, both 19, are emerging as the next generation of tennis entertainers at Wimbledon 2026, aiming to upset top seeds Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. The duo hopes to follow the path of previous crowd favorites like Nick Kyrgios and Carlos Alcaraz, who captivated audiences with their flair and fearlessness on the All England Club's hallowed turf.
Rafael Jodar: The Heir to Alcaraz
Rafael Jodar has been dubbed the heir to Carlos Alcaraz, rising rapidly through the ranks. Seeded 23rd at Wimbledon, he has already claimed his maiden ATP title in Marrakech in April and reached the semi-finals at the Barcelona Open, where he defeated Cameron Norrie. He also beat world No. 6 Alex de Minaur en route to the quarter-finals in Madrid and made a run to the last eight at Roland Garros.
Standing at 6'3", Jodar plays a flatter, more aggressive style than typical Spanish clay-court specialists, stepping inside the baseline to dictate play. He credits Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer as influences. "It's true that when you watch them, I try to copy them," Jodar told Standard Sport. "When you're on court against them, you can really feel the speed of the ball and see what they do well in the important points of the match."
Joao Fonseca: The Brazilian Showman
Joao Fonseca, often compared to Brazilian footballer Neymar for his showmanship, stunned Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller at the French Open. He boasts one of the heaviest forehands on tour and combines blistering pace with fearless all-court play. Fonseca won the ATP Next Gen Finals in 2024 as the youngest and lowest-ranked player in the draw.
"I am a Roger Federer fan, but Rafael Nadal is the guy," Fonseca told Standard Sport. "He has many talents, but people can also look at his hard work, the way that he fought and gave it all. That inspired me a lot." Fonseca also draws inspiration from Djokovic's joy of playing.
Impact on Wimbledon 2026
With Alcaraz injured and Kyrgios only playing doubles, Jodar and Fonseca have an opportunity to capture the Wimbledon crowd. Their attacking styles and youthful exuberance are expected to provide thrilling matches, potentially upsetting the established order led by Sinner and Djokovic. Both players are prone to errors due to their aggressive approaches, but that unpredictability makes them compelling to watch.
