Williams Sisters Win US Open Doubles After Serena's Apology

Serena and Venus Williams claimed the US Open women's doubles title on Sunday, defeating top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-2, 6-2 in 89 minutes. The victory came just 40 hours after Serena's controversial singles semi-final loss to Kim Clijsters, where she received a point penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Before the doubles final, Serena issued an apology to the line judge she verbally abused during the semi-final. She had been fined $10,000 (£6,000) and could face further penalties, including loss of her $350,000 prize money or a suspension, pending an investigation by the grand slam committee.

The win earned the Williams sisters $420,000 and marked their 10th career grand slam doubles title together, and third of the year after victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
