The United States women's national team secured a 2-1 victory over Brazil in an international friendly held at the Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza on Tuesday night. The match, which served as preparation for both teams ahead of upcoming tournaments, saw the USWNT dominate possession early on but struggle to break down a resilient Brazilian defense.
First Half Action
The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when midfielder Lindsey Horan curled a free kick from the edge of the box into the top corner, leaving Brazilian goalkeeper Luciana with no chance. Brazil responded strongly, with forward Marta testing US keeper Alyssa Naeher with a powerful strike from distance. However, the US doubled their lead just before halftime when a corner kick caused chaos in the box, and defender Sophia Wilson inadvertently turned the ball into her own net while attempting to clear.
Second Half Drama
Brazil came out with renewed vigor after the break, pressing high and creating several chances. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Debinha latched onto a through ball and slotted past Naeher to make it 2-1. The hosts pushed for an equalizer, but the US defense held firm, with center-back Becky Sauerbrunn making crucial interceptions. The match ended 2-1, extending the USWNT's unbeaten run against Brazil to five games.
Both teams will now shift focus to their respective World Cup qualifying campaigns, with the US aiming to defend their title in 2027.
