USA Exits World Cup After Defensive Collapse
The United States men's national team has been eliminated from the World Cup following a defeat to Belgium, with defensive errors proving costly. Fan Zachary Ruiz expressed a mix of disappointment and optimism, noting that the team's performance evoked memories of the 2010 squad, unlike the “mercenary vibe” of 2014 or the lackluster 2022 campaign. “This team played with flair and there were moments, even in this game, where it felt like we pinned Belgium back,” Ruiz said. However, he acknowledged that “the defensive lapses and they all came at once,” highlighting that goalkeeper Freese is “not a top level keeper.”
Bright Spots for USMNT: Young Core Emerges
Despite the loss, Ruiz identified standout players from the tournament: “Freeman, Balogun, and Tillman were the standout new players… and I think the core of them + Pulisic, McKennie, and Robinson will be the future for the next cycle and possibly beyond.” He remained skeptical about Dest. The team’s attacking flair was evident in spells, but defensive vulnerabilities ultimately undid their progress.
Belgium Advances to Face Spain
Belgium now moves on to the quarterfinals, where they will face Spain. Spain has been defensively formidable, conceding no goals in World Cup qualifying until their last match, when qualification was virtually secured, and have kept clean sheets throughout the tournament. Belgium managed to rest Kevin De Bruyne during the match against the USA, preserving their key player for the upcoming challenge. Ruiz noted Spain’s “dynamic attack” and the difficulty of the task ahead for Belgium.
