Trump Lingers at World Cup Final Trophy Presentation After Spain Win
Trump Stays at World Cup Final Trophy Ceremony After Spain Win

Donald Trump caused a scene at the World Cup final on Sunday by lingering on the trophy presentation platform after handing the Jules Rimet trophy to Spain's captain Rodri. The 80-year-old US President stayed put following Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in New Jersey, bobbing along as the Spanish team celebrated.

Trump's Unscripted Moment

Trump repeated his behavior from last summer's FIFA Club World Cup, when he presented the trophy to Chelsea and stayed on stage. At the World Cup final, he was eventually ushered away by a laughing FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The incident drew attention away from the match, which was described as fairly forgettable.

Planned Role Confirmed

It was confirmed last month that Trump would present the trophy to the winners. Infantino stated, “That’s always been the plan. That’s how it’s always been done in the past – the president of the country where the final is held presents the trophy together with the FIFA president.”

Spain secured their victory after a tight contest that went into extra time, with the only goal coming late in the match. The win marks Spain's first World Cup title since 2010.
