Trippier Returns to Newcastle Roots
Former Newcastle United captain Kieran Trippier was back on Tyneside on Saturday to watch England defeat Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals, securing a semi-final spot. The 35-year-old, who left the club at the end of the season, joined friends at the Freight Island fan zone in Newcastle city centre.
England's World Cup Journey
England's 2-1 extra-time victory, sealed by Jude Bellingham's winner, set up a semi-final clash with Argentina. Trippier, who scored a free-kick in England's 2018 semi-final loss to Croatia, wore a retro 1982 England shirt for the occasion.
Trippier's Club Future
After four years at Newcastle, Trippier was released in May and subsequently signed by Wolves, who aim for an immediate return from the Championship following relegation. He was instrumental in Newcastle's resurgence, including their Carabao Cup triumph last year.
Fan Zone Atmosphere
Trippier watched alongside ex-Magpies defender Paul Dummett, reserve goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, and local business owners Joe and Ollie Brack. Freight Island, a £16 million venue opened in June on the site of the former Debenhams in Eldon Square, features a £1 million retractable roof and multiple bars and food vendors.
Upcoming England Match
Freight Island expects large crowds for England's semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday, with general admission tickets priced at £10 and premium seats at £20.
