Steve Clarke has stepped down as Scotland head coach, the Scottish Football Association announced on Sunday, following the team's elimination from the 2026 World Cup. Scotland's departure was confirmed on Saturday night after Croatia beat Ghana 2-1 in Philadelphia, leaving Clarke's side with three points from three Group C matches and a goal difference of minus three. The Scots failed to secure a place among the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the last 32.
Group Stage Results and Missed Opportunities
Scotland opened their first World Cup campaign in 28 years with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Haiti in Boston, midfielder John McGinn scoring the decisive goal. However, they then suffered a 1-0 defeat to Morocco, losing a goal within 70 seconds, before a 3-0 loss to Brazil in Miami. Needing favourable results from other groups, Scotland required Ghana to beat Croatia by at least three goals in Group L, but that did not happen. Other scenarios involving Group K and Group J also fell through, ending Scotland's hopes.
Clarke's Tenure and Criticism
Since taking over in 2019, Clarke guided Scotland to three of four major finals, but the team failed to progress beyond the group stage in all three, scoring just four goals in nine matches while conceding 16. This record drew heavy criticism from fans. In May, Clarke signed a new contract with the SFA until 2030, a decision now under scrutiny. The Tartan Army's growing frustration has intensified pressure on the SFA ahead of the Nations League campaign starting in September.
