Rangers Legend Spackman Urges Ibrox to Sign Lewis Ferguson
Spackman Urges Rangers to Sign Lewis Ferguson

Nigel Spackman, a former Rangers title winner, has urged the club to sign Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson, describing the midfielder as a player entering his prime who would be a 'priceless' addition to Derek McInnes's squad. Ferguson, who turns 27 in August, has been heavily linked with a return to Scotland, with Rangers and his former Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes reportedly keen on bringing him to Ibrox.

Ferguson's Rise in Serie A

Since joining Bologna in 2022, Ferguson has developed into a top-class midfielder, impressing in Italy's top flight. Spackman, now a TNT Sports pundit for Serie A, has closely watched his progress. 'Lewis has become an absolutely terrific footballer,' Spackman said. 'He's the type of player who would be a massive hit at Rangers and I'm sure Derek would definitely look at him.'

Ferguson's growth has been marked by his leadership qualities and versatility. He has overcome a serious injury at the end of the 2024-25 season to regain form, contributing goals and adapting to various midfield roles. 'He's shown real leadership qualities. But, also, he's come up with a goal here and there,' Spackman noted. 'You're talking about a midfielder who can play six, eight or a ten for your team. That would be priceless for Derek to have a top-class player like that.'

Competition for Ferguson's Signature

Ferguson's impressive performances, including a standout display for Scotland at the 2026 World Cup despite the team's struggles, have attracted interest from several clubs. Spackman expects bids from within Serie A, with Atalanta and Roma among the potential suitors. 'Can Rangers afford Lewis and can they prise him away from Serie A? He's done very well out there; he's very highly thought of and is a leader and a captain,' Spackman said. 'There may be clubs in Italy who'll want him to continue out there.'

Reports have suggested a potential swap deal involving Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin moving in the opposite direction, but Spackman hopes Rangers can secure a statement signing. 'Listen, we're talking about someone who's not at Rangers at the moment. But he would be a fantastic signing in my view,' he added.

Ferguson's contract with Bologna runs until 2028, and his market value has risen significantly since his move from Aberdeen. Rangers face stiff competition, but Spackman believes the player's quality and versatility make him an ideal fit for McInnes's system.
