Socceroos Secure World Cup Last 32 Spot with Draw Against Paraguay
Socceroos Reach World Cup Last 32 After Paraguay Draw

Australia's national football team, the Socceroos, have secured their place in the World Cup last 32 after a composed 0-0 draw against Paraguay in Santa Clara. The result confirmed second place in Group D, setting up a knockout clash in Dallas next week.

Popovic Hails 'Wonderful Performance'

Coach Tony Popovic expressed pride in his squad after the match. "The staff, the players – just a wonderful young group of men – and now we go to Dallas and we'll try and do something special," he said. Popovic admitted a late scare when goalkeeper Patrick Beach made an injury-time save, but overall felt the team deserved the result. "We were very good today, just a wonderful performance," he added.

Match Details and Next Opponents

The identity of Australia's last-32 opponent remains undecided, with possibilities including Egypt, Belgium, Iran, or New Zealand. The match is scheduled for Friday 3 July at 1pm local time (Saturday 4 July at 4am AEST) in Texas. The Socceroos will face the second-placed team from Group G, which will be determined on Friday.

Dominant First Half and Key Performances

Australia dominated the first half, particularly down the right flank where Jordy Bos and Cristian Volpato troubled the Paraguayan defence. Bos, typically a left-sided player, adapted well to an unfamiliar role. Midfielder Aiden O'Neill was named player of the match but credited Bos: "They were a good combination, lots of threat... He's such a talented player. You can see that in what he creates for us. He's a special talent."

Winger Ajdin Hrustic revealed Bos had only trained on the right side in two sessions following an injury to Jacob Italiano. "He was switched on... I asked him if he played as a right wing or right wingback, so I started calling him Dani Alves," Hrustic said.

Preparations for Dallas

The team will enjoy a seven-day break before their knockout match, flying from Oakland to Dallas on Wednesday. Hrustic noted the importance of rest and refocusing: "Hopefully, we'll get one or two days off, and then we can calm down, enjoy that moment of qualifying, and then you will switch back on and get right back to work."

Popovic made six changes to the side that lost to the USA, surprising many. Hrustic expressed confidence in the coach: "Our boss knows what he's doing, we all have trust in him. He goes with a gut feeling. He did it in the first game, he did it in the second game, he's done it the third game and it's worked, so we believe in him."

No Easy Route Ahead

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Hrustic said: "There's no easy route in the World Cup. You've got to be switched on, it has to be 100%. We've seen against the US if you switch off for 20 minutes, you can concede two goals."
