Channel 5's psychological thriller Riptide returns to screens this week, four years after its initial broadcast in 2022. The four-part series follows newlyweds Alison and Sean, whose idyllic life unravels when Sean vanishes after a morning surf.
Where Was Riptide Filmed?
Riptide was shot on location across Melbourne and Victoria, Australia, over several weeks in August 2022. The production utilized stunning coastal scenery and a waterfront property that cast members described as 'phenomenal'.
Benny Turland, who plays Ethan Weston, praised the seaside home of Alison and Sean: 'It was so beautiful. It was very cold! Because of that ocean, the wind coming in was icy, and we have a different kind of weather zone in Melbourne. It's like a wind tunnel and you can get four seasons in one day which can be frustrating to shoot. You'll be covered in jackets with hot water bottles and umbrellas one minute, and the next minute the sun's out and you're sweating! But, yeah, the location was phenomenal.'
Studio and Additional Locations
Certain sequences were filmed at Network 10 studios in Nunawading, Melbourne, which previously served as the production base for Neighbours. The cast and crew spent several weeks in the region, capturing the area's unique landscapes.
Lead actress Jo Joyner, who portrays Alison, said: 'I really, really fell for Melbourne in a big way – it was honestly amazing. I could live there. I will always have a soft spot for the place now.'
Cast Impressions of Melbourne
David Berry, cast as Dan Burrell, highlighted Melbourne's 'incredible sunsets': 'Looking out and seeing the sun setting over the water, and the red in the sky, it did make me fall in love with Melbourne. It's not the Australia that many people understand as their idea of what Australia is. In a lot of people's minds you've got Sydney harbour, the Great Barrier Reef – these are things often seen in Australian films – but Melbourne has its own beautiful landscapes that I don't really think people have really come to appreciate exist in Australia. It's cold, it's moody, it's misty, it's raining. And it's also sometimes bright and beautiful, and it has so many different pockets of natural beauty that were unique to me, and will be unique to audiences as they can fall in love with Australia in a completely different way than they've come to imagine it.'
When to Watch
Riptide will repeat on Channel 5 on Monday, June 29 at 9pm.
