Emma Raducanu Forced to Withdraw from Miami Open on Tournament Eve

In a significant blow to her season, British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the upcoming Miami Open just before the tournament begins. The 2021 US Open champion, who was seeded 24th, will miss the event due to ongoing health issues, marking her second withdrawal from this competition in three years.

Health Setbacks Derail Raducanu's Miami Campaign

Raducanu has been struggling with a viral illness that she contracted during the Middle Eastern swing of tournaments, and she has yet to fully recover. This condition was compounded by a chest infection that affected her performance in last month's final in Cluj, Romania. Her inability to shake off these ailments has led to this late withdrawal, frustrating her plans after a recent third-round appearance at Indian Wells.

At Indian Wells, Raducanu showed promise with a strong opening victory over qualifier Anastasia Zakharova, winning 6-1, 6-3. However, she faced a tough defeat against sixth seed Amanda Anisimova, losing 6-1, 6-1 in just 52 minutes. Following the match, Raducanu reflected on the challenges, stating, "When I'm playing someone who's at the top like that, I think they have an extra 10 miles an hour on their serve than me. If I'm not feeling it, that gap feels more evident in terms of weight of shot, in terms of power."

Impact on Ranking and Future Tournaments

The withdrawal from the Miami Open carries significant consequences for Raducanu's WTA ranking. She is set to lose 215 ranking points, as she reached the quarter-finals in the 2025 edition of the tournament. This drop could affect her seeding in future events and her overall standing in the women's tennis circuit.

Looking ahead, Raducanu has committed to the WTA 500 tournament in Linz, an indoor clay-court competition scheduled for April 6 to 12. However, this commitment means she will also miss Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifier match in Australia during the same period, adding to the disruptions in her schedule.

Coaching Uncertainty and Past Withdrawals

Raducanu's coaching situation remains in flux, adding another layer of complexity to her season. She parted ways with full-time coach Francisco Roig in January and has not been actively seeking a replacement. During Indian Wells, she collaborated informally with Mark Petchey, but this arrangement is now uncertain following her Miami withdrawal. After her exit at Indian Wells, she noted, "Mark helped me out a lot this week and it was nice to be on court with him again. But he will be commentating for Tennis Channel this week, probably until the end, so I don't know how much time I will get with him before Miami."

This is not the first time Raducanu has withdrawn from the Miami Open; she also pulled out in 2024 due to a lower back problem. Her repeated absences highlight the physical challenges she faces in maintaining consistency on the tour.

Raducanu was originally slated to face either fellow Brit Sonay Kartal or Peyton Stearns in her opening match at the Miami Open, which was scheduled for Thursday or Friday. Her absence opens up the draw for other competitors, while she focuses on recovery and preparation for upcoming events.
