Raducanu's Australian Open Opponent Switched to Austria Amid Social Media Copy Row
Potapova's Nationality Switch & Copy Claims Before Raducanu Clash

British tennis star Emma Raducanu is set for a fascinating second-round clash at the Australian Open against a player who recently changed her national allegiance and found herself at the centre of a social media controversy.

From Russia to Austria: Potapova's Defection

Raducanu's opponent, Anastasia Potapova, confirmed in December that she now represents Austria, having defected from Russia. The world number 55 described Austria as "a place I love, incredibly welcoming and a place where I feel totally at home". Potapova, 24, revealed she had been living in the country, particularly Vienna, for a couple of years before making the switch official, stating the process "didn't happen all of a sudden".

Her move comes against the backdrop of a wider sporting context. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian and Belarusian players have been banned from competing under their national flags at tournaments like Wimbledon.

'Copying' Claims and a Blunt Response

However, Potapova's announcement was overshadowed by accusations that she had copied the wording from another player's social media post. When announcing her Austrian citizenship, she used identical words to those employed by former Russian player Daria Kasatkina in March, when Kasatkina revealed her intention to represent Australia.

Kasatkina, an openly gay player who has been critical of Vladimir Putin, has since gained Australian citizenship. When questioned about the striking similarities after her first-round win in Melbourne, Potapova offered an unapologetic defence.

"Well, I don't find anything wrong with that because you cannot say it in a better way," Potapova stated. "And why not? And yeah, it was perfect words. I loved it... I don't think that it's something terrible happened. I think the media just blew it up... I mean, who cares about posts, right?"

Raducanu Braces for a 'Tricky' Second-Round Test

Potapova, who has a career-high ranking of 21, advanced to face Raducanu after coming from behind to beat Suzan Lamens in the first round. The British number one, who won the US Open in 2021, is well aware of the challenge posed by her new Austrian opponent.

"She's been very high ranked. I remember watching Anastasia all through juniors," Raducanu said. "She was always the player to watch and beat through juniors. She's been very high ranked as well in the pros."

Raducanu added: "She got a really tough match today so that must give her a lot of confidence. A big hitter. I know it's going to be a really tricky one. I need to just gather my strength and prepare as best as possible for the next match."

The match adds another layer of intrigue to Potapova's career, which has previously attracted controversy. During the 2023 Indian Wells tournament, she was criticised for wearing a Spartak Moscow football shirt during a practice session.
