Oscar Piastri is reportedly considering activating a release clause in his McLaren contract, a move that could trigger a sensational swap with Max Verstappen. According to Grand Premio, the Australian driver is unhappy with his status within the team and may leave at the end of the 2026 season, opening the door for Verstappen to join McLaren from Red Bull.
Piastri's Relationship with McLaren Sours
Piastri was on course for the World Championship last year but saw his performances decline in the second half of the season, while teammate Lando Norris clinched the title. The Italian Grand Prix incident, where McLaren's management favored Norris over Piastri, is said to have fractured the relationship between the driver and the team. Sources indicate that Piastri's manager, Mark Webber, has been searching for a new team for his client, believing Piastri will never be the number one driver at McLaren.
Verstappen's Frustrations at Red Bull
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen's future at Red Bull is uncertain. The Dutchman has a contract until 2028 but reportedly holds a clause allowing him to leave at the end of the 2026 season. Following his retirement at the British Grand Prix, Verstappen's father Jos and manager Raymond Vermeulen were seen in a heated discussion with Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies. Verstappen's DNF at Silverstone means he cannot finish in the top two of the Drivers' Championship before the summer break, a condition that enables him to activate his exit clause.
Mekies commented on Verstappen's frustration: "Look, he's right not to be happy. It is very unpleasant for drivers to be let down by the car in a high-speed corner in two consecutive races, let it be for two different reasons. And it is, in a much lower scale, also extremely unpleasant for us as a group to send our drivers to the gravel trap. So, he is right to be unhappy. I have no doubt that as a team that will put in place what is necessary for that not to happen again, even if we failed to do that today. We take that as seriously as one can do."
Sensational Switch on the Cards
If Piastri activates his release clause, McLaren could pursue Verstappen as his replacement. The potential swap would reshape the F1 driver market, with both drivers seeking new challenges. Piastri, 25, aims to become a team's leading driver, while Verstappen looks for a competitive environment after Red Bull's recent reliability issues.
