Newcastle Lead Manchester United in Race for World Cup Star Manzambi
Newcastle Lead Man Utd for World Cup Star Manzambi

Newcastle United have reportedly been told they lead Manchester United in the transfer race for World Cup star Johan Manzambi. The Switzerland attacker has grabbed three goals and two assists in the United States, which has alerted several Premier League clubs.

Manzambi's Impressive Form

Playing for Freiburg in the 2025/26 season, Manzambi managed 16 goal contributions, but it has been his displays on the global stage that have caught the eye. Unsurprisingly, his current club will be looking to take advantage of his stock being so high and have set a £51 million asking price, according to Sky Sports Germany.

Newcastle's Interest

The Magpies are monitoring Manzambi's situation with new talks held internally over a possible transfer. If that changes to discussions with his camp or the Bundesliga club in the coming weeks, Newcastle will almost certainly be in the driving seat to sign the 20-year-old. That is because, according to The Daily Mail, Eddie Howe's side are at the front of the queue to sign him, and the numbers involved with both the player and club are not thought to be an issue.

Manchester United's Alternative Target

It has been added that Manchester United are also in the race for his signature, having held a long-term interest, but their current focus is Alex Scott of Bournemouth. United were also in the mix for Sandro Tonali before deciding that the transfer fee and his salary demands were too costly.

Newcastle's Midfield Plans

Newcastle are also on the hunt for a new central midfielder after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for £100 million. Despite playing further forward at the World Cup, Manzambi made 25 appearances for Freiburg in the engine room and could therefore be the Tonali replacement.

Other Transfers

While Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Hall, and Tino Livramento have been linked with departures, there has been at least one incoming to St James' Park, with Bazoumana Toure joining in a £43 million deal from Hoffenheim. He arrived as the replacement for Anthony Gordon following his £69 million move to Barcelona earlier in the summer transfer window.
