The club's intensified operation against ticket touting, launched last week, initially resulted in some fans receiving notifications that their accounts were temporarily restricted due to “sustained activity” detected on their profiles.
Fans Caught in the Crossfire
The email demanded that recipients confirm every device they regularly use to access their accounts. While some restrictions were lifted after fans complied, others remain in limbo, facing the potential loss of their season tickets despite insisting they have done nothing wrong. The club acknowledged in a statement to those who appealed that its operation was “successful,” but admitted that “some innocent supporters may have been affected” and apologized for the inconvenience.
However, the fiasco took a new turn on Monday when a further batch of supporters received identical emails from the initial rollout, effectively accusing hundreds of the club’s most dedicated fans of touting. One fan expressed their anguish on X, stating: “I've had the dreaded email from United. 22 years, home and away, every game. Upwards of 75 European aways, and now it's over. Finished. And for what? Helping my mum forward a ticket.”
Appeal Process Under Scrutiny
United has offered affected supporters the chance to appeal, but those who have protested their innocence and submitted evidence face a nervous wait as the club grapples with the backlash. According to an email sent to the Manchester Evening News from a supporter who appealed their restriction, the club stated that it would review the case with the appeals panel “next week.” In the email, United said they could not confirm a date for an outcome but assured it would be before the new season.
Fans have accused the club of showing disregard for some of their most dedicated season ticket holders. The Manchester United Supporters' Trust and United Fans' Forum are currently working to assist affected supporters through official channels, seeking to resolve the growing dispute.
