Man United Fans: Why Choose Gordon Over Rashford?

Manchester United fans have all agreed on one thing during England's World Cup campaign: why did Barcelona sign Anthony Gordon over Marcus Rashford? Gordon started England's first two group games, but Rashford's impact off the bench against Croatia and Ghana earned him a start against Panama, where he was one of the brightest attacking threats.

Rashford Outshines Gordon

Thomas Tuchel would have been frustrated watching Gordon in the opening two games, as he ran down blind alleys, offered no attacking threat, and failed to service Harry Kane. In contrast, Rashford has been direct and aggressive, looking like a player with a point to prove after missing out on a dream move to Barcelona.

Barcelona paid £70 million to sign Gordon from Newcastle, nearly three times the £26 million buy option they had for Rashford from Manchester United. The decision becomes even more puzzling when comparing their numbers: Gordon scored 26 goals for Newcastle over the last two seasons, but 11 were penalties, leaving just 15 non-penalty goals. Rashford contributed 14 goals and 14 assists during his loan spell at Barcelona last term.

Wage Demands a Factor

Wage demands likely played a role. Gordon earned around £150,000 per week at Newcastle, while Rashford's wages returned to £325,000 per week after United qualified for the Champions League. Barcelona could have doubled Gordon's salary and still paid less than Rashford earns. However, paying £44 million more for Gordon remains questionable.

United's insistence on the £26 million fee may have led Barcelona to stubbornly pursue Gordon instead. United's board, determined not to be taken advantage of, held firm on the buy option.

Rashford's World Cup Performances

Rashford's World Cup displays have made Barcelona's decision look foolish. He scored against Croatia and looked sharp against Ghana, earning a start against Panama where he impressed. Fans now debate his future, with some opposing his return to United while others, like Harry Maguire, welcome him back.

Michael Carrick, who has played with, coached, and briefly managed Rashford, suggested in April that the door is open for his return. United are relaxed about the situation, knowing strong World Cup performances can only increase interest in the forward.
