Daizen Maeda, the Celtic forward, has been vocal about his ambition to play in the English Premier League, appearing on Japanese TV shows and even approaching strangers to declare his desire for a move. However, Record Sport's Michael Gannon, reporting from Celtic's pre-season base in the Algarve, Portugal, suggests Maeda should remember he is still under contract and being paid by the Scottish champions.
Maeda's Public Campaign
While most of Celtic's World Cup stars are resting before reporting back for pre-season, Maeda has been actively promoting his EPL aspirations. Gannon writes: "Rather than snoozing on the sun lounger, Daizen Maeda seems to be running around telling anyone who’ll listen he wants to play in the English Premier League." The journalist adds that Maeda's behaviour might be better directed at respecting his current employers.
Exit Likely for Maeda and Others
Gannon notes that Maeda's departure appears increasingly probable, with manager Martin O'Neill already discussing the attacker in past tense. Maeda is not alone in the departure lounge; Reo Hatate and Arne Engels are also expected to leave. Hatate, once valued at over £20 million, may now only fetch a couple of million due to inconsistent form. Gannon describes Hatate as "clearly a player" but not one who fits O'Neill's system, often slipping into "autopilot" and causing problems with careless passing.
Engels, on the other hand, is expected to generate a significant fee for Celtic. O'Neill has reportedly accepted that these three key players will move on, and the club is working behind the scenes to secure replacements.
Pre-Season Atmosphere Positive Despite Transfers
Despite the looming exits, the mood in the Celtic camp remains positive, buoyed by the success of the previous season. The squad is enjoying facilities in the Algarve, including golf outings, with Liam Scales facing scrutiny over his handicap after winning the cash prize. Gannon warns, however, that if replacements aren't secured soon, Celtic may struggle to field a full team for a fourball.
