Charles Leclerc ended a 624-day winless streak to take victory in a dramatic British Grand Prix at Silverstone, as Kimi Antonelli's late suspension failure and Max Verstappen's crash reshaped the championship battle.
Leclerc's Dominant Drive
Leclerc blasted past pole-sitter Antonelli at the start and never looked back, claiming his first win since the United States Grand Prix in October 2024. The Ferrari driver controlled the race from the front, but the real drama unfolded behind him.
Antonelli's Heartbreak
Antonelli seemed set for a podium finish until a suspension failure struck his Mercedes with just 11 laps remaining. "Something is broken," yelled the teenager over the radio. Television replays showed he had damaged a wheel shield after running wide at Copse. He pitted for repairs but eventually finished ninth, only to receive a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits, dropping him to 16th and leaving him pointless.
Verstappen's Crash
Max Verstappen crashed out at Stowe on lap 48 while running third, beaching his Red Bull in the gravel in front of 16,000 Lando Norris supporters. A furious Verstappen blasted his car as "s***" as he departed the scene. The crash triggered a safety car that ultimately decided the race.
Safety Car Controversy
Leader Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both stopped for fresh tyres under the safety car, but George Russell stayed out, elevating him to second. The safety car remained on track until the chequered flag, waved by Sir Mo Farah, denying a one-lap shootout. Leclerc took the win ahead of Russell and Hamilton, with Norris fourth. Some of the record 175,000 crowd booed at the lack of a restart.
Title Race Implications
Antonelli's failure to score allowed Russell to cut his championship deficit from 43 points to 25. Hamilton, who gave up second place by pitting, is 32 points back. Russell was 68 points behind Antonelli after the Monaco Grand Prix on June 7, but Antonelli's scoreless outings in two of the last three races have revitalised Russell's title hopes with 13 rounds remaining.
Hamilton Under Investigation
Hamilton faces a stewards' investigation for a yellow-flag infringement, scheduled for 17:00. The seven-time world champion will be aggrieved to have surrendered a podium position due to the safety car strategy.
