Nick Kyrgios has been fined $16,500 (£13,535) for his behaviour during a second-round loss to Mischa Zverev at the Shanghai Masters. The ATP announced the penalties on Thursday, including a $10,000 fine for lack of best efforts, $5,000 for verbal abuse of a spectator, and $1,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
During the 6-3, 6-1 defeat, Kyrgios appeared to put minimal effort into his serves and groundstrokes, at one point walking to his chair after a weak serve without waiting for Zverev's return. He also argued with a fan who questioned his sportsmanship.
After the match, the 21-year-old Australian cited fatigue, saying he was physically and mentally tired from playing many matches in a row. He admitted he took the easy way out and did not show up, describing himself as having tapped out.
Regarding the confrontation with the spectator, Kyrgios said he felt that if the fan knew what they were talking about, they would be on the court and successful themselves. He added that the spectator did not understand what he was going through.
