Ecuador has submitted a formal complaint to FIFA regarding unsportsmanlike treatment ahead of their World Cup Round of 32 match against host nation Mexico on Tuesday evening. The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) raised concerns over off-field actions that they say violate fair play principles.
Late-Night Disturbances and Travel Delays
Video footage shows Ecuador players holding hands and praying before the match at the Estadio Azteca after Mexican fans caused a late-night disturbance outside their team hotel in Mexico City. Fireworks were aimed at the building, with some reportedly set off from the hotel roof, as players peeked through curtains during the early hours.
Additionally, manager Sebastian Beccacece revealed that Ecuador arrived at their hotel three hours and 20 minutes behind schedule due to unexplained delays with their flight and coach. The team endured a nine-hour travel day from their Columbus training base in Ohio, far from ideal preparation for facing an in-form Mexico side.
FEF Statement and Beccacece's Response
The FEF issued a statement: "Regarding certain off-the-field actions that took place prior to the Round of 16 match, the Ecuadorian Football Federation informs that it has submitted a formal complaint to the organisers, as this conduct is far removed from the principles of fair play, equity, and unity that a FIFA World Cup should represent."
"Therefore, the FEF respectfully calls upon the relevant authorities to pay closer attention to these incidents and to adopt the necessary measures to safeguard the integrity of our players, coaching staff, and supporters. We trust that these unsportsmanlike actions will not overshadow the football celebration that unites two brotherly nations."
Beccacece took a measured tone: "We go, we compete, and we play, no complaints or excuses. I am grateful. We might have tired features, but how could I be upset about being in a World Cup?"
England's Potential Path
The situation is a warning for England, who could face host nation Mexico in the Round of 16 if both sides win their matches against DR Congo and Ecuador respectively. Mexico is unbeaten in nine World Cup matches at the Estadio Azteca, which sits 2,200 metres above sea level with poor air quality, posing additional challenges.
It is understood Ecuador attempted to change hotels after learning Mexican fans planned to gather outside the Westin Santa Fe, where they beeped horns, revved motorbikes, played instruments, and sang offensive chants. Riot police arrived around midnight to prevent escalation.
