Dermot Desmond Sees Celtic Need for Transfers in Shelbourne Stalemate
Desmond Witnesses Celtic Transfer Need in Shelbourne Draw

Celtic's pre-season kicked off with a 1-1 draw against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, with principal shareholder Dermot Desmond in attendance. The result highlighted the need for reinforcements as the Scottish champions remain the only top-flight club yet to make a summer signing.

Desmond Watches as Celtic Draw

Desmond witnessed a largely uneventful match until two late penalties decided the outcome. Shelbourne took the lead in the 88th minute through Harry Wood's spot-kick, but Celtic's Shin Yamada equalised from the penalty spot after Maik Nawrocki was fouled.

The Hoops are expected to finalise a £6million deal for Colombian striker Camilo Duran from Qarabag in the coming days, which could kickstart a flurry of arrivals. However, fans are frustrated by the lack of activity so far.

Cameron Carter-Vickers Returns

Manager Martin O'Neill welcomed back defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, who missed most of last season with an Achilles injury. The USA international played 45 minutes, winning most aerial duels alongside Dane Murray, and is expected to provide much-needed stability to the backline.

Balikwisha and Other Outcasts

Michel-Ange Balikwisha, who made just 14 appearances last season after a £5m move from Royal Antwerp, started in his preferred No.10 role but was largely ineffective before being substituted at half-time. O'Neill admitted he felt sorry for the Belgian attacker, who may be facing a make-or-break pre-season.

Maik Nawrocki, returning from a loan at Hannover 96, impressed in defence and won the late penalty. Shin Yamada, who had a forgettable spell in Germany with Preussen Munster, equalised from the spot. Left-back Adam Montgomery, whose last competitive appearance for Celtic was in December 2021, conceded the penalty for Shelbourne's goal.

Young Guns Impress

Academy products Joseph Haney (17) and Sean McArdle started, while substitutes Thomas Hatton, Kyle Ure, Liam Kennedy, and Francis Turley caught the eye. Turley, who signed a four-year deal under Brendan Rodgers, played at right-back.

New Signings Urgently Needed

With about half the matchday squad made up of academy prospects, the need for new signings is clear. Celtic are without their World Cup contingent and injured players like Jota (ACL tear). The imminent arrival of Duran is a statement, but O'Neill will hope for more additions as the team heads to a training camp in Albufeira, Portugal.
