Alex de Minaur has eased into the quarter-finals of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi. The Australian No 1 seed won 6-3 6-2 6-1 in 93 minutes on Louis Armstrong Court.
Despite not being at his best, de Minaur capitalised on a host of errors from his opponent, who is ranked 435th in the world. The match was de Minaur's first on one of the tournament's three show courts, having been granted a premium placing in the second week.
De Minaur broke serve three times in the first set to take control, then moved 5-0 ahead in the second before being broken himself. He served out at the second opportunity. The third set saw further breaks, with Riedi's ninth double-fault ending the match.
The last Australian remaining in the adult singles, de Minaur will face Canadian No 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals. Auger-Aliassime defeated Andrey Rublev to set up the meeting.
“I was happy with my level, my focus,” said de Minaur. “I knew he had some big shots and he’s had a hell of a week coming through quallies. I’m just happy to be back in the quarter-finals here.”
