Coco Gauff's Frustration Boils Over in Dubai Semifinal Loss to Svitolina
Tennis star Coco Gauff's emotions boiled over during a dramatic semifinal match at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Friday, as she appeared to scold her serving coach Gavin MacMillan mid-match. The world No. 4 was ultimately defeated by Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in a three-hour thriller, with the final score reading 4-6, 7-6, 4-6.
Mid-Match Outburst Directed at Coach
Midway through the second set, Gauff's frustrations reached a peak after she hit one of a dozen double faults during the contest. The American turned away from the court and could be clearly heard saying, 'I've been doing everything you've wanted for the last 6 months...' She then lowered her voice and appeared to add, 'And it's gotten not better at all, bro.'
These comments are believed to have been directed at MacMillan, a biomechanics expert whom Gauff hired ahead of last summer's US Open specifically to address her serving issues. This is not the first instance of Gauff lashing out at her coaching team during a match. At the 2023 US Open, while working with Brad Gilbert, she was heard telling him to 'Stop talking' during a match.
Persistent Serving Struggles
Gauff has faced significant challenges with her serve throughout her career. Last season, she led the WTA Tour with more than 300 double faults, which prompted the hiring of MacMillan. The coach, who has worked with athletes across various sports, notably helped Aryna Sabalenka reinvent her serve back in 2022.
Despite MacMillan's efforts to alter Gauff's serving motion, the struggles persisted in Dubai. The match against Svitolina was a rollercoaster, with the Ukrainian holding four match points in the second-set tie-break. Gauff managed to cling on and force a deciding set, but ultimately could not prevent Svitolina from securing victory and advancing to her first Dubai final in nearly a decade.
Missed Opportunity for All-American Final
The loss was particularly disappointing for Gauff as it dashed hopes of an all-American final. Her compatriot Jessica Pegula had earlier defeated Amanda Anisimova 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semifinal. Instead, Svitolina will face Pegula for the championship title.
This incident highlights the intense pressure and high stakes in professional tennis, where even top-ranked players like Coco Gauff can experience moments of visible frustration with their coaching strategies during critical matches.
