Cardiff fans send Bellamy clear Colwill message after heroics

Rubin Colwill became the talk of Welsh football on Monday after a dazzling display off the bench for Cardiff City against Wrexham. His stunning last-gasp free-kick in the 98th minute not only salvaged a point for Cardiff but also reignited the debate over his role for Wales under Craig Bellamy, who was in attendance.

Fan reaction on social media

Taking to social media, one fan wrote: "Rubin. Colwill. Take notes, Craig Bellamy." Another said "If Craig Bellamy doesn’t build the Welsh side around Rubin Colwill I will genuinely find out where he lives and go up there and ask him why."

One fan suggested both Rubin and his brother Joel should be in contention for Bellamy's plans. "Hopefully performances and consistency this year in the Championship means he can’t be overlooked anymore even by Bellamy. A future wales midfield consists both Colwill brothers."

Bellamy's past comments on consistency

Bellamy has previously suggested he wants more consistency from Colwill. Speaking after omitting him from his squad last summer, he said: "I want to see more. I want to see more. I want that consistency. It's a question we speak about, and we know we're going to get asked. He's a person I really like. I've enjoyed seeing what I'm seeing at the moment. But I want to see more."

Both Rubin and Joel were included in the squad for the World Cup play-offs against Bosnia in the spring, but Rubin was left out of the final matchday squad. He was also not included for the most recent camp for friendlies against Ghana and Romania.

Colwill's free-kick inspiration

Colwill has played just 25 minutes under Bellamy. He hopes to enjoy a big season for Cardiff and draws inspiration from Gareth Bale when it comes to free-kicks. "I think you've got to watch everybody," he said. "You've just got to take what you can, the best bits from loads of other people. I think obviously one probably close to home is Gareth Bale. He used to score a lot of nice free-kicks. I used to be sat there watching him score some special ones on free-kicks."

He added: "I'd watch what he'd done and try and copy him, try and emulate him, just trying that technique. But everybody's different, everybody's body's different, so what works for him might not work for others. I think it's just more about what his set-up is and what he does that you can take, and how he focuses. I think you've got to be mindful. You can't just go smashing free-kicks every day because you'll probably get injured. But where and when you can, just focus and practise, think about what you're going to do and try and execute it."
