Ben Davies signs new Tottenham contract, Bissouma leaves

Ben Davies has signed a one-year contract extension at Tottenham Hotspur, keeping the Welsh defender at the club until 2026. The 33-year-old's previous deal was set to expire at the end of the month, but the extension means he will now spend 13 years in north London.

Davies, who underwent surgery on a broken ankle in January, made only three Premier League appearances this season. However, his leadership qualities are highly valued by manager Roberto De Zerbi, who took over in March and guided Spurs to safety.

Davies said: 'Tottenham Hotspur really feels like home. It's been a huge part of my football journey and I'm grateful for what the club has given me so far in my career. My heart's on my sleeve for this club and I'll give everything for it.'

The defender played a key role off the pitch during the club's relegation battle, attending team meetings and matches despite his injury. He praised De Zerbi's impact: 'He lifted us, he lifted the fans, he lifted the club. Having his presence, his confidence, and we can feel a lot of relief having got over the line we did.'

Davies also acknowledged the support of Tottenham fans during the difficult season. 'What they gave us towards the end of the season was incredible - a huge, huge lift. I think it really brought us closer as a group. Sometimes in the tough times you see what people are about. The fans really stood by us. That's what true fandom is, right? Hard times, good times, we stick together.'

Yves Bissouma departs

As Davies extends his stay, midfielder Yves Bissouma will leave Tottenham upon the expiry of his contract on June 30. Bissouma joined from Brighton in 2022 for £25 million and made 111 appearances in all competitions. His first-team opportunities were limited under Thomas Frank due to disciplinary issues, but he featured more prominently under De Zerbi during the successful relegation battle.

Also departing is Matthew Craig, who made his first-team debut against Leeds on the final day of the 2022-23 Premier League season. The midfielder spent time on loan at Doncaster, Barnsley and Mansfield Town.
