Two Potential Wales XVs for Barbarians and Fiji Summer Tests
Two Potential Wales XVs for Barbarians and Fiji Tests

Wales head coach Steve Tandy faces a delicate balancing act this summer as Wales look to carry forward the momentum from a positive finish to their Six Nations campaign.

Wales begin their summer schedule with an uncapped clash against the Barbarians at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on June 27, before returning to Cardiff City Stadium a week later to take on Fiji.

With several of his leading players unavailable against the Barbarians, Tandy is expected to rotate his squad heavily across the two fixtures.

Here is a look at how he could set up two contrasting teams for the matches.

Barbarians

Wales will not have access to his English-based players for this clash against the Barbarians at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, because the game falls outside of World Rugby's designated international window.

Tandy will be keen to strike the right balance between offering opportunities to those on the fringes of the squad and building momentum ahead of the Nations Championship meeting with Fiji.

With Louis Rees-Zammit absent, the full-back berth against the Barbarians is between Scarlets trio Tom Rogers, Ellis Mee and Blair Murray.

Tandy went away from utilising Murray as a full-back during the Six Nations, with both Rogers and Mee stronger under the high ball.

Although Rogers has operated primarily on the wing, there is a growing expectation that his move to the Ospreys is driven by a desire to establish himself at full-back.

This would therefore represent an ideal opportunity for Tandy to assess him in that position.

Mason Grady and Murray would be good options on the wing and could cause damage in what is expected to be a fast and loose game against the Barbarians.

Tandy could choose to tinker with his midfield but it makes sense for Joe Hawkins and Eddie James to continue where they left off during the Six Nations.

Dan Edwards is the incumbent number 10 and given Sam Costelow has not played since sustaining a shoulder injury against Scotland, the smart money is on the Ospreys number 10 retaining his place in the side with Kieran Hardy at scrum-half.

Wales have issues at tighthead with Keiron Assiratti expected to pull out of the squad due to injury, with Tomas Francis and Archie Griffin not involved this summer.

The smart money is on Tandy putting his faith in the 57-cap Dillon Lewis as first choice this summer.

Dewi Lake has been out for the last couple of months with a shoulder injury so Tandy may want to give Ryan Elias a run-out against the Barbarians, with Evan Lloyd used as an impact player from the bench.

With Rhys Carré and Nicky Smith unavailable, Tandy has to choose between the experienced Gareth Thomas and uncapped Cardiff loosehead Rhys Barratt.

Dafydd Jenkins, Adam Beard and Freddie Thomas will all be absent against the Barbarians so Tandy may have no choice but to start Cardiff's Teddy Williams — who has not played a game of rugby since dislocating his foot against Connacht last October — alongside Ben Carter.

There are plenty of options in the backrow but Jac Morgan is likely to return as captain alongside Aaron Wainwright with James Botham, Alex Mann, Taine Plumtree and Ryan Woodman fighting it out at blindside flanker.

Tom Rogers; Mason Grady, Eddie James, Joe Hawkins, Blair Murray; Dan Edwards, Kieran Hardy; Rhys Barratt, Ryan Elias, Dillon Lewis, Teddy Williams, Ben Carter, James Botham, Jac Morgan, Aaron Wainwright.

Replacements: Evan Lloyd, Gareth Thomas, Ben Warren, Ryan Woodman, Taine Plumtree, Reuben Morgan-Williams, Sam Costelow, Josh Adams.

Fiji

The principal selection question centres on Rees-Zammit. While the Bristol Bears star impressed at full-back during the Six Nations, his outstanding pace remains his greatest asset and is perhaps best exploited from the wing.

Either Rogers or Mee could start at full-back due to their solidity under the high ball.

Tandy will want some continuity from the Barbarians game and therefore it would be smart to keep the same centre partnership of Hawkins and James.

Tomos Williams will return to the team at scrum-half to partner Edwards at half-back.

Carre will also come into the starting XV at loosehead with Smith on the bench while Lake will start and potentially captain the side if he is fit.

Dafydd Jenkins is another player who simply has to start and based on his performances during the Six Nations, he would partner Ben Carter at lock.

It would also make sense to start the same back-row as took to the field against the Barbarians.

At some point this summer, Tandy will be keen to take a closer look at Exeter Chiefs back-row Kane James and Harlequins centre Bryn Bradley.

Yet with Fiji's visit to Cardiff City Stadium representing Wales' most realistic opportunity to secure a Test victory this summer, there is a strong argument for prioritising continuity and cohesion to begin with.
